Hello folks, this is Ghost coming at you with the first written review for the webpage. This is the first review that I have written since the review that Batman and I wrote for the Indy Project. My grammar may be terrible, so please be kind. Now without further delays, I will review All-Star Batman #1.
This is Scott Snyder’s continuing stories of Batman after the end of the New 52. In an interview with Snyder he was asked, why All-Star Batman, he replied because I still have stories I want to tell with this character. He elaborated that he was shackled by the constraints of the stories in the New 52 and when it was over he was wanting to do more, but was only contracted to do 50 issues. He said that he wanted to tell stories about the villains that do not get the spotlight most of the time. He also made an analogy that the New 52 stories were like a car going down the interstate and that All-Star Batman is going to be like going off-roading. Well Mr. Snyder I totally agree.
One of the things that hooked me right away is that this is a Batman story that takes place outside of Gotham. It left me thinking “that’s not something you see very often”. The story is told in the style of a road trip with each section of the issue being miles traveled. The story is centered on Two-Face/Harvey Dent. Batman is trying to get Harvey out of the city and is being chased by several villains trying to get him back. The story is ramped up to 11 right away as Batman, Firefly, and Killer Moth crash through the window into a diner. The story takes a lot of twists and every time you turn the page it gets crazier. By the end of the first issue we are left questioning Alfred’s loyalties and we have only traveled 1 mile of a 500 mile trip. The artwork done by John Romita Jr. Danny Miki, and Dean White compliment the story. It works as weird yen and yang as the tone of the story is dark but the artwork is lighter and at the same time it keeps that Batman grittiness.
All in all there is a whole lot to love about this comic. Snyder and the team have done an excellent job so far. If you like Batman and enjoyed Snyder’s run on the New 52 you should definitely pick this up, you will not be disappointed. I give All Star Batman issue #1 a solid 4.6/5
